Do health insurance policies offer protection for expenses incurred during pregnancy and childbirth?
Health Insurance policies with a maternity benefit cover generally includes any kind of hospitalisation related to childbirth, as well as pre/post-natal expenses. Pre-hospitalisation expenditure is covered up to a period of 30 days before delivery, while post-hospitalisation expenditure is covered up to a period of 60 days. These hospitalisation costs include room charges, nurse and surgeon charges, emergency ambulance charges, anaesthetist consultation charges and medical practitioner fees.
It also covers any expenses incurred in relation to caesarean births as well as normal delivery. Also, any post-delivery complications endured by the mother are also covered. However, keep in mind that termination of the pregnancy within 12 weeks from the date of conception will not be covered by the policy, while you can only claim maternity benefit cover if you are below 45 years of age.
