Non operation of a locker may also lead to a situation where the bank can open the locker. State Bank of India for example has a clause whereby if you do not operate your locker for more than a year, the branch has a right to open the locker even if the rent is paid regularly. Check with your bank branch for formalities involved in your case so that your locker stays safe.

Hi Sooraj,

If you haven’t operated your bank locker for a substantial period of time, you could face a situation where the bank will open the locker themselves. For example, SBI guidelines state that if a locker is non-operational for over a year, the bank has the right to open the locker regardless of whether the rent has been paid on a regular basis. It would be in your best interest to check with your bank regarding the rules as well as any other formalities involved with non-operational lockers, just to be on the safe side.
